Getting Started

Patent Connector gives your AI assistant (ChatGPT, Claude, or any MCP client) direct access to patent office APIs. To get started:

1. Create an account at patent.dev/patent-connector
2. Add your patent office API credentials (EPO, USPTO, EUIPO, DPMA, IP Australia, JPO, TIPO)
3. Generate a Personal Access Token
4. Connect your AI assistant using the token

What You Can Do

• Search patents by keyword, applicant, inventor, or classification
• Read patent documents - claims, abstracts, descriptions, and full text
• Look up patent families, legal status, and prosecution / register history
• Get cited prior art - the patent and non-patent references from a search report, with relevance categories
• Browse PTAB proceedings and decisions, and search office actions, rejections and citations
• Look up trademarks (EU and US) - status, documents, and mark images
• Search registered designs (EU) and retrieve design views
• Retrieve documents and drawings - file-wrapper documents as PDF, and patent images
• Get summaries and comparisons - patent snapshots, timelines, side-by-side analysis
• Track ownership - assignment transfers and continuity chains
• Browse classifications and examination manuals - CPC, IPC and FI plus office guidelines, with AI-powered reference search (built in, no credentials)

Patent Classifications & Manuals (CPC/IPC/FI classifications and examination manuals with AI search) are built in and always available - no credentials required.

Tips

• Use search_patents with provider-specific syntax. Ask your AI assistant to call get_search_syntax for the right query format.
• Use get_patent_summary for a quick overview before diving into full documents.
• Use compare_patents to see two patents side by side.
• Use get_quota_status to check your remaining API calls.

Getting Help and Reporting Issues

You can report bugs, ask questions, or suggest improvements directly through your AI assistant using the send_feedback tool. Just ask your assistant to send feedback - it will create a support ticket and we will respond via email.

Privacy and Data Handling

• Your API credentials are encrypted at rest (AES-256-GCM)
• We do not store, log, or cache your patent queries or results
• Server infrastructure is hosted in Germany (Hetzner Cloud)

What tool responses contain

Patent Connector tool responses include only patent data retrieved from official patent office APIs. Specifically:

• Patent tools: patent text, bibliographic data, legal status, classifications, and other public patent office data
• server_info: server version, list of available providers and their configuration status (configured/not configured)
• send_feedback: a ticket ID and confirmation message
• Temporary URLs: some tools (trademark documents, trademark images) return short-lived URLs for viewing PDFs and images

Tool responses do not include email addresses, user IDs, session tokens, query history, or other personal information about the person making the request.
